I'm a director and educator based in Washington, D.C. I run the Shakespeare Theatre Company Academy, an intensive MFA program in classical acting; and I've spent the last thirty-plus years directing Shakespeare (and other things) at theaters across the country.
Before D.C., I founded two theater companies and spent a lot of time in storefront spaces, rehearsal halls, and festival tents in Chicago, Minnesota, and elsewhere. I hold an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, which is where I learned that the best thing a director can do is serve the story and the actors telling it.

Shakespeare Theatre CompanyWe don't expect to love every painting we see when we go to a museum. And we shouldn't expect to love every play. It's not a consumer activity; it's an engagement activity. We're not just showing the audience the story. We're inviting them into it.
